is a network of scholars and specialists—in disciplines including archaeology, art history, cuisine, urban planning, history, environmental science, and classics—who, in addition to our normal work as professors and researchers, design and lead in-depth walking seminars for small groups of intellectually curious travelers.

The Context vision is to bring together local scholars and specialists with curious travelers to educate and impassion them; to allow them access to places and cultures that might otherwise remain out of sight to the casual visitor; to invite them off the tourist track and into the real life of the people, history, and culture that makes these capitals, destinations.

Florence, Syracuse University MA Program

Since 1964, Syracuse University has offered a unique Master’s program devoted to the study of Ƶ Renaissance art that is primarily based in Florence. This is the oldest M.A. art history program accredited in the United States where most of the study—two of three semesters—is conducted in Italy.
Although the Florence M.A. Program’s focus is early modern Ƶ art, students are encouraged to think broadly about the period and the discipline of art history. Via seminars that are led by internationally recognized scholars and conservators, students carefully analyze artistic styles and techniques, consider issues related to original audiences and settings, and closely study original documents and texts. In addition, they engage with the history and practice of art conservation, art historical theories, methods, and historiography, the collection and display of art, and the ways in which the visual culture of the period relates to larger Mediterranean and global historical and artistic contexts.
The small size of the Program (approximately six participants per year) ensures that professors work closely with each student to create a rigorous and dynamic intellectual experience.
We are pleased to offer various levels of financial support that consist of:
Florence Fellowships (full tuition and a generous stipend)
Kress-Florence Legacy Fellowships (partial tuition and a substantial stipend)
Partial tuition scholarships
